The Con Club, Altrincham

A new restaurant, bar and microbrewery

6:15pm on a Saturday night was our introduction to Altrincham's lively dining scene.  Always at the last minute, we hadn't booked anywhere thinking that early on a Saturday evening wouldn't be a problem.  How wrong we were...

First we tried Bistrot Pierre, a French restaurant on George Street - only to discover it was fully booked and we were just too late for bar food.  OK, no problem, we had heard that there was something going on at the market so drifted up there to discover the Grade II listed Market House, next to the covered market.

The place was packed out with couples, families and groups filling all the sharing tables, not a single seat left.  It looked inviting and the food stalls around the sides offered an exciting variety of cuisines and drinks.  Too bad we couldn't wait for a couple of seats to become free as we were heading off to the cinema later.

Leaving the Market House we spotted a few more restaurants, all really busy and we ventured into The Con Club with fingers crossed hoping they could squeeze us in.

No problem if we didn't mind sharing a table - we didn't so soon joined our fellow diners and ordered a sushi platter to share, sake & lime marinated chicken skewer with celeriac slaw and harissa dip and tenderstem broccoli spears.  Only starters, but they were perfect as we didn't want a blow out before a couple of hours spent watching a film.

Opened in Nov 2016, Altrincham's old conservative club has been renovated into a restaurant, bar and microbrewery and has long sharing tables like the Market House, plus a handful of small ones, a lively bar area and an open view of the kitchen.

The food was delicious, the service came with a smile and the only drawback was that their own brewed beer had run out!  While we ate the music drifted over the hubbub with Jumpin' Jack Flash, some Happy Mondays, Iggy Pop - Lust for Life and the Doors - Break on Through.. even some Kinks for good measure.

The atmosphere was buzzing, the bar area was busy and everyone seemed to be having fun.

It set the scene perfectly for the next part of the evening - watching Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. An old school star wars adventure, great!
